Irish Peacekeeping in Lebanon: A Historical, Political and Socio-Cultural Study

This IFI study explores Irish peacekeeping within UNIFIL from its creation in 1978to the 2006 war and its aftermath. It focuses on the importance of humanitarian assistance and civilian protection to the Irish peacekeepers ethos and mission in South Lebanon. It further examines the concept of Irish “neutrality” in the context of peacekeeping in the conflict-ridden Middle East, and within framework ofparticipation in NATO Partnership for Peace and European Union Military Staff, and the history of peacekeepers' training and civil-military coordination mechanisms.

Rita Sakr is a Research Associate on a Global Uncertainties Leadership Fellowship at the University of Kent, UK. She has a PhD from the University of Nottingham, UK and has published works on Middle-Eastern studies, migrant writings, post-conflict cultures and literatures, and James Joyce. Discussant: Timur Goksel is a lecturer at the Department of Political Studies and Public Administration at AUB, and former UNIFIL senior advisor.
