Issam Fares declares: The Extension of the Parliament's term is an Unfortunate Consequence of the Unconstitutional 2000 and the 1960 Electoral Laws
07 Jun 2013

Former Deputy Prime Minister Issam expressed regret over the prevailing situation in Lebanon which led to the extension of the parliament's term.

He issued a communiqué which read:

'While the Lebanese are waiting for the holding of the parliamentary elections on the basis of a constitutional law that would ensure a sound representation for all the Lebanese factions, the parliament's term was extended in a move that assures the inability to enact such a law and that indicates that the 1960 Law, as well as the 2000 electoral law adopted in 2005, were the reasons why we left Lebanon because those are two unconstitutional laws since they lack to ensure the necessary participation of national balance, and because they produced an authority that is unable to enact a modern law that meets the aspirations of the Lebanese people and preserves the roles of all their categories in the management of national affairs'.

The communiqué went on saying, 'We join our voice to the voice of the Maronite Patriarch who calls for the adoption of a constitutional electoral law, which implies upon the concerned authorities and leaderships to overcome their inability and enact such a law that would not marginalize or reduce any of the components of the Lebanese family'.
