Champion Miss Alleged, one of only two fillies to win the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT), was euthanized Feb. 28 because of a ruptured uterine artery after foaling a Miesque's Son filly the previous day. The newborn was the 13th offspring produced from the 21-year-old daughter of Alleged and was placed on a nurse mare.
Miss Alleged, who was out of the Boldnesian mare Miss Tusculum, was owned by Issam Fares and kept at Fares' Haras de Manneville in France.
As a racemare for Fares Farms, Miss Alleged clinched 1991 champion female turf honors after beating males in both the Breeders' Cup Turf and Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes (gr. IT). Trailing directly behind her in both races were defending champion turf male Itsallgreektome and Ever Ready Epsom Derby (Eng-I) winner Quest for Fame.
Miss Alleged, the first female Turf winner since Pebbles in 1985, also was highly recognized in Europe her 4-year-old season in 1991. Trained by Pascal Bary, she was a French champion as well as the top-weighted female on the International Classifications (at 11 to 14 furlongs).
Miss Alleged stayed in training with West Coast trainer Charlie Whittingham in 1992. She placed in three graded stakes in as many starts, including the San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap (gr. IT). She was retired that year with wins and placings in a dozen of 15 starts and earnings of $1,757,342.
As a broodmare, Miss Alleged got off to quick start. Her first foal, by Danzig, was the highest-priced colt, at $950,000, at the 1995 Keeneland July yearling sale.
Miss Alleged's broodmare record eventually failed to keep pace with what she had accomplished on the racetrack. Only three of her 11 foals of racing age have won, including stakes winner Zghorta (by Gone West). She also is the dam of a Peintre Celebre yearling filly.
Miss Alleged, who was bred in Kentucky by Carl M. Freeman, spent the first part of her broodmare career at Fares Farm near Lexington. She was sent to Haras de Manneville in 2000
