Deputy Prime Minister Issam Fares arrived to the International Airport of Houari Boumediene, embarking on an official visit to Algeria with the Lebanese President, on the head of a delegation including the First Lady Mrs. Andre Lahoud, Foreign Minister Mahmud Hammud, Lebanon’s Ambassador in Algeria Ahmad Abdullah, and the heads of the Press and Editors’ Syndicates Mrrs. Mohammad Baalbaki and Melhem Karam.

From the VIP Lounge, Fares headed with the Lebanese delegation to the residence of the Lebanese President where the latter held with his Algerian counterpart President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika a one-hour bilateral meeting.

In the afternoon, Fares moved with the Lebanese delegation to the Palace of the Algerian Presidency where they received a warm welcome from President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika where a closed-door session took place between the Lebanese President and his Cypriot counterpart. Later, the Lebanese and Algerian delegations held a series of enlarged talks, in which took part the Deputy Premier Fares.

Also on the schedule was a meeting with the head of the Algerian Council of the Nation with whom discussions broached means to strengthen bilateral ties between Beirut and Algiers. The latest developments in the region were also included on the agenda for deliberation.

Conclusion of Agreements At the end of the bilateral talks and the enlarged round of negotiations, Foreign Minister Mahmud Hammud signed, in the presence of Presidents Lahoud and Bouteflika, two agreements with his Algerian counterpart: the first for the establishment of a joint committee for the promotion of bilateral cooperation and coordination, and the second for consultation between the two countries’ Foreign Ministries to coordinate stances and exchange expertise.

The signing ceremony was followed by a dinner banquet attended by Fares and the Lebanese delegation at the People’s Palace.
